Soon after Season 5 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine premiered last fall, Andy Samberg spoke with Jimmy Kimmel about the previous season’s cliffhanger, which saw Samberg’s character, Jake Peralta, and Stephanie Beatriz’s Rosa Diaz, wrongly imprisoned. At the time of its filming, the lovable cop comedy hadn’t yet been picked up for Season 5. 'We were like, 'Well, if this is the last episode of the whole series, it’s gonna be sucky,' Samberg said with a laugh.
The fate of a Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 was still an open question until about a week before its finale this past Sunday. On May 10, FOX announced a slaughter: Nine-Nine and a handful of other shows, including The Last Man on Earth and The Mick, would be canceled. The internet (and Twitter, particularly) felt the cult show's loss hard; celebrity fans like Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mark Hamill revolted, and a Change.org petition to save the show garnered nearly 40,000 supporters. There was immediate speculation that Netflix, Hulu, or TBS would swoop in to save it. But all of 31 hours later, NBC announced that it would be picking up Brooklyn Nine-Nine for another 13 episodes.

Crying over @Brooklyn99FOX ??? It’s the cop show the world needs and has needed for so long. It has addressed relevant and difficult topics with grace and humor. It’s also the only show we watched on our honeymoon because romance. Petition to cancel Fox News instead. pic.twitter.com/JoSXCAFWWj

— Izza Shaheed ? (@IzzaShaheed) May 11, 2018Riding on the show's expected demise, thinking back to Samberg's almost nonchalant foreshadowing on Kimmel felt common: Brooklyn Nine-Nine has ran on fumes more than once. In Season 4's super-meta finale, the precinct was teetering on the edge of closure. Jake and his best pal Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) were going to go down in a 'blaze of glory,' while Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) would cram a nine-year mentorship with Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) into one day. It turned out that Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti) and her huge social-media presence saved the Nine-Nine, highlighting the precinct’s commitment to its community. So it’s fitting the recent swell of support on real-life social media would bond the fan base and propel the show to its new home.
Overall, Season 5 was about upping the ante from last season, which suffered from lackluster patches and a so-so prison arc. Jake and Amy’s wedding plans only came up sporadically, like when the Vulture (the always incredible Dean Winters) swooped in on their wedding venue. In 'The Negotiation,' Jake lived out his dream of being a hostage negotiator, while 'Nutriboom' introduced a sinister pyramid scheme. The second to last episode, 'White Whale,' tied up other loose ends -- Rosa caught a criminal that’s long eluded her, and Holt’s race for the commissioner’s job finally began to heat up.
The Season 5 finale, of course, was created when the show’s fate was still uncertain. 'Jake and Amy,' began, fittingly, with everything falling apart before the pair's wedding. Amy’s veil is on life support, the cake is AWOL, the ringbearer is sick, and there’s a bomb at the wedding venue. But Jake stays cool, coming up with solutions for every problem while Amy sucks on nicotine patches. When the bomb squad shows up, they uncover another issue: Amy’s ex, Teddy (Kyle Bornheimer), is back, again declaring his love. Meanwhile, Rosa falls for an Uber driver, played by the down-to-earth Gina Rodriguez. At the precinct, Holt hems and haws over whether to find out if he was chosen as police commissioner, something that’s long been his dream.

As the wedding plans crumble, Jake and Amy decide to get married at City Hall. Boyle’s only goal is to save the day, and he does so in true Brooklyn Nine-Nine fashion: creating a sparkling outdoor setting with flashing police lights and shredded document paper instead of flower petals for Amy to walk down the aisle.
The finale’s 'toit nups' were a satisfying end to Season 5 while leaving enough doors open for more storyline exploration, but the real victory in its Season 6 return is in keeping things like LGBTQ issues on mainstream network television, where graceful representation is still sorely needed. (Rosa is bisexual and Captain Holt is openly gay.) Beatriz, who came out in 2016, says writers reached out to her as the story was developed, asking how she wanted the sexuality of her character to be revealed on the show.
'It’s really cool to me that our show is exploring something with almost the safety net underneath it, telling the audience, ‘Look, we’re not doing this so that we can explore a story and simply throw it away when it’s convenient for us. We are going to keep this person around because we love this person already.’ It’s part of the family,' Beatriz told Entertainment Weekly in 2017.
Furthermore, both Beatriz and Fumero are Latinx, and both have spoken out about the importance of their presence on primetime TV. Their initial fears that one of them would be dropped from the show gradually fell away. 'I remember we would grab each other and go to the side and say, 'Do you think they will keep both of us?' Beatriz said in the cover story of Latina magazine in 2015.
brooklyn nine nine was fucking woke the show brought up topics like racism, homophobia, prejudices against woman, america’s corrupt standards, had GOOD representation that wasn’t used for ratings, and you’re just gonna cancel it like it’s worthless pic.twitter.com/ObmBe00E56
— ????? (@lexasnicole) May 10, 2018And the thing is that we could talk about every damn episode of this show and pull out something like this. This show subverts traditional cop stories on the regular, and it does so much with representation and emotional honesty.
— Mrs. WTF (@snurri) May 10, 2018i really adore brooklyn nine-nine. i am grateful for its intersectional representation of queer people and people of color, the casual ways it addresses and deconstructs masculinity and institutional oppression, and its inclusive humor. and all in a network show!! #saveb99
— jomny sun (@jonnysun) May 11, 2018The show has also never shied away from addressing divisive issues like racial bias and corrupt cops. For example, in the 2014 episode 'Moo Moo,' Sgt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) is racially profiled by another officer; the storyline is further complicated when Holt at first discourages him from filing a complaint, thinking it would make matters worse. Holt eventually relents, realizing that not doing so would be perpetuating the same struggle he went through to get to his post, and that standing up for Terry would be an important step in changing prevailing attitudes about race for everyone in the NYPD.
There are, of course, plenty of worthier, more humane causes to save than a TV show. But watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine every week was a form of self-care for many viewers that other shows couldn't compete with, as proven through all of the supportive tweets and Reddit threads. In the outpouring of emotional reaction GIFs ripped from the show, along with the season finale, was as good as any reminder that it was a show well worth saving.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American television policesitcom created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. The series revolves around Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), an immature but talented NYPD detective in Brooklyn's 99th Precinct, who often comes into conflict with his new commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher). The rest of the cast features Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz, Terry Crews as Terry Jeffords, Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago, Joe Lo Truglio as Charles Boyle, Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti, Dirk Blocker as Michael Hitchcock, and Joel McKinnon Miller as Norm Scully. The series premiered on Fox on September 17, 2013, where it aired for its first five seasons before moving to NBC beginning with season six.
Produced as a single-camera comedy, Fox originally ordered 13 episodes for its first season, eventually expanding it to 22 episodes. The series has been acclaimed by critics for its cast, especially Samberg, Beatriz, Fumero, and Braugher. It has won two Creative Arts Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Samberg has won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy, while Braugher has been nominated for three consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and has won two Critics' Choice Television Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The series has also received particular praise for its portrayal of serious issues whilst retaining a sense of humor. For its portrayal of LGBTQ+ people, the series won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
On May 10, 2018, Fox cancelled the series after five seasons. The following day, NBC picked up the series for a sixth season of thirteen episodes; on September 7, 2018, NBC extended the season to a count of eighteen episodes. The sixth season began on NBC on January 10, 2019. On February 27, 2019, NBC renewed the series for a seventh season.

Premise[edit]
Set in the fictional 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn, Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows a team of detectives headed by the overly serious, newly-appointed Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher). The detectives include Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), who has a high rate of making successful arrests and solving cases, despite his relaxed, carefree and childish attitude. He eventually falls for his stern by-the-book nerdy but loveable partner, Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero). The hard-working but timid Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) is partnered with his crush, the stoic, aggressive and stern, Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). The pair of older Detectives, Michael Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Norm Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) often seem incompetent, stupid and lazy, but have solved more cases over the years simply because they have been on the job much longer. The detectives report to Sergeant Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), a gentle giant and devoted family man who initially has a phobia of going back to active field police work for fear of being killed in the line of duty and leaving his children fatherless. The precinct also includes sarcastic and dominating civilian administrator Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), who dislikes her job, prefers to enjoy her social life, and believes that dancing is her life goal.

Development and production[edit]
The NYPD 78th precinct building in Brooklyn. An exterior image is used as an establishing shot during the show.
Michael Schur and Dan Goor, who had known each other since their time as students at Harvard and had collaborated on Parks and Recreation, liked the idea of setting a comedy in a police station, a setting which they felt was insufficiently used for television comedies since Barney Miller. They pitched the idea to NBCUniversal, where Schur had a development deal. NBC passed, and the duo sold the show to Fox.[1]
On May 8, 2013, Fox placed a thirteen-episode order for the single-camera ensemble comedy.[2][3][4] On October 18, 2013, the series was picked up for a full season of 22 episodes, and was later chosen to air with New Girl in a 'special one-hour comedy event' as the Super Bowl XLVIIIlead-out programs.[5]
The exterior view of the fictional 99th Precinct building is the actual 78th Precinct building at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Bergen Street. It is one block south of the Barclays Center and one block east of the Bergen Street station on the New York City Subway's 2, 3, and 4 routes.[6]
On May 10, 2018, Fox canceled the series after five seasons.[7] Shortly afterwards, there were announcements that negotiations had begun with Hulu, TBS, NBC and Netflix for the possibility of reviving the show for a sixth season.[8] The next day, TVLine reported Hulu had already passed on the series.[9] Shortly after, Goor announced that NBC would pick up the series for thirteen episodes.[10] In a statement, NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt expressed regret for originally passing on the series to Fox and was 'thrilled' at its addition to NBC.[11][12] A few days later, it was announced that the series would premiere mid-season in the 2018–19 television season.[13] In September 2018, NBC ordered an additional five episodes for season 6, bringing the order to 18.[14] The sixth season began on NBC on January 10, 2019.[15] On February 27, 2019, NBC renewed the series for a seventh season.[16]

Reception[edit]
Rotten Tomatoes gave season one a score of 97% based on 55 reviews. The consensus is: 'Led by the surprisingly effective pairing of Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a charming, intelligently written take on the cop show format.'[23] For Season 2, it received a score of 100% based on 17 reviews. That season's consensus is: 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine's winning cast, appealing characters and wacky gags make it good comfort food.'[24]Metacritic gives the first season of the show a weighted average rating of 70/100 based on 33 reviews, indicating 'generally favorable reviews'.[25]
The Huffington Post posted a list of '9 Reasons You Need to Start Watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine',[26] while Paste magazine celebrated 'The 10 Best Moments from Brooklyn Nine-Nine's First Season' in 2014.[27]
Brooklyn Nine-Nine has received praise for its forthright portrayal of LGBTQ people and the serious issues that affect them, while retaining its sense of humor.[28] Portraying Captain Ray Holt, a lead character, as an openly gay, no-nonsense black man in a same-sex interracial marriage is unprecedented in police sitcoms.[29][30] The coming-out as bisexual by detective Rosa Diaz in episode '99', the 99th episode of the series, has been described as an important representation of a sexual orientation.[31]

As it happens, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' is actually pretty good. Not only does it have an excellent (and diverse!) ensemble cast, but it subverts stereotypes, while delivering the kind of silliness and absurdity that perhaps only 30 Rock has executed so well. Arguably, the show is still finding [its] footing, so before the entire world starts watching without you, we have some convincing to do.
